A Dachshund may not be right for you.
Dachshunds are not for everyone. They are many things and I urge you to research the breed. For me there will never be another. I am done as they say. The things that others may not like about them make me love them all the more. I will say this they will look to take advantage of you, they are clever, smart, and will manipulate you if they can. I in fact love that, they make me stay mentally sharp out thinking them constantly. I have never met a dog that makes me focus more. Their personalities are simply the biggest and best I have ever observed in any breed.
I will list all the good and the bad I can find below for you to decide for yourself "if this is for me".
#1 there is nothing better than being butt to butt in the bed or snuggled up tight to a dachshund NOTHING BETTER!
If you own one, you’ll know that deep down, your life will never be the same again. Ever.
You see, once you bring a Dachshund into your life, your home isn’t really yours anymore.
They will steal your heart with their love, devotion, and silly antics.
As the saying goes – “They’re like chips. It’s hard to have just one.”
They were bred to not back down or give up in the face of a threat
Dachshunds are strong-willed and want their way how and when they want it.
There is always the word “selective” in front of “listening
Their lying–ahem–acting, is better than Meryl Streep’s.
It’s definitely possible to train a Dachshund though – they are whip smart – but it takes a lot of patience and consistency.
Dachshunds Live for a Long Time The average Dachshund lifespan is 14-16 years old.
Most live at least until they are 11 or 12 and I have seen many, many Dachshunds live to be between the ages of 17 – 20.
If you own a Dachshund, be prepared to be in it for the long haul.
Some are more vocal than others You’ll have to work to train a Dachshund to stop barking and keep it under control.
Dachshunds Are Notoriously Hard to Potty Train
I wouldn’t say that Dachshunds are impossible to train, however, they are very smart, strong willed, stubborn, and like everything their own way. I have found that the key is to understand what makes them motivated. Griff will do anything for for food (especially cheese!) Make sure you are patient and consistent and you will have a perfectly trained Dachshund who will idolize you.
Dachshunds Are Prone to Back Injury
This breed can be prone to slipped discs because of their long bodies and short legs, however, most Dachshunds live a long and happy life. IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) is a condition that affects dachshunds as well as some other long backed breeds. Keeping them fit not fat, waiting until they are fully matured before neutering, and supporting their backs when picking them up will help reduce the risk of IVDD
Dachshunds Are Prone to Obesity
Doxies. Love. Food.
Dachshunds Love to Dig
Dachshunds Are Fiercely Loyal
They don’t know they’re short
Dachshunds love to burrow under sheets laundry etc.
Dachshunds are the smallest hounds
NO TOY IS SAFE AROUND A DACHSHUND
THEY RECOGNIZE THEIR OWN BREED
They’re masters of the side eye.
They think they’re Rottweilers
